Reef, one of the top active lifestyle brands in the world,
is the world's leader in authentic, surf-inspired footwear
and has been since 1984. The sandals and closed-toe
footwear have made great strides, appealing to the entire
active lifestyle market, from surfers and skaters to
snowboarders and wakeboarders and others who enjoy the
active lifestyle all over the world.
Natives of
Argentina, Reef's founders, brothers Fernando and Santiago
Aguerre began surfing as kids. The brothers immersed
themselves in the surfing lifestyle, from promoting
international surfing competitions to hosting radio shows
on the soirt and eventually opening a surf shop in
Argentina in the 1970's.
Attracted to the Southern California lifestyle, both
Fernando and Santiago relocated to La Jolla. In 1984 they
combined their experience in the surf industry to form
Reef, a company dedicated to making the best active
lifestyle sandals and footwear in the world. They began
the company with working capital of $4,000 and confidence
in a market for a high-quality beach sandal.
The functional and fashionable sandals quickly
developed a loyal following among surfers and beach-goers.
From this modest beginning of a two-man operation with
sales of 3,000 sandals in 1985, Reef has grown to become
the world's leading manufacturer of beach and sport
sandals and a leader in closed-toe footwear. In September
1995, the company relocated their world headquarters to a
40,000 square foot facility in San Diego, which in the
year 2000, was expanded to an 80,000 square foot facility
with an offsite and state-of-the-art 65,000 square foot
distribution center. Today, Reef's product line has grown
to include guy's sandals and closed-toe footwear, and in
1998 the popular line of girl's sandals was launched. In
2002, Reef also launched a logo program including
T-shirts, sweatshirts and caps/beanies for guys and girls.
In 2003, the logo program evolved into a full blown men's
apparel line complete with boardshorts, walkshorts and
knits and woven shirts. The men's apparel line hit stores
in Spring 2004.
